Are PLA Baking Tools Food Safe? What Customers Should Know

Customers often ask whether PLA baking tools can be described as “food safe.” The most accurate answer is that the material used to make a product is only one part of the question. A finished item’s manufacturing environment, equipment, surface, intended use, cleaning method, condition, and applicable standards also matter.
Farmhouse Craft Works does not advertise or certify its products as food safe. Our products are made on consumer-grade 3D printers rather than in a certified commercial food-manufacturing facility. This article explains what that means and how to care for your products.
What is PLA?
PLA, or polylactic acid, is a thermoplastic commonly used for 3D printing. It is available in many colors and formulations and is widely used to manufacture lightweight tools, organizers, molds, cutters, and accessories.
However, a general description of PLA does not certify every spool of filament or every finished product for food contact. Pigments, additives, printer components, production conditions, and post-production handling can vary. A claim about the base material should not be treated as certification of the completed item.
Why does the finished product matter?
3D-printed items are created one layer at a time. The finished surface can contain visible layer lines and small spaces that are different from the smooth surface of glass, stainless steel, or commercially molded plastic. Those areas can be harder to clean if residue is allowed to dry or if the item becomes deeply scratched or worn.
The printer and production environment also form part of the finished-product assessment. Because our equipment and workspace are not certified as a commercial food-manufacturing facility, we do not make a food-safe certification claim.
How should Farmhouse Craft Works products be cleaned?
Follow the care instructions provided with the individual product. Unless a listing states otherwise, use these general guidelines:
- Hand-wash before first use and after each use.
- Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge.
- Clean detailed areas promptly so residue does not dry in small spaces.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before storing.
- Do not place the product in a dishwasher or microwave.
- Do not soak it for extended periods.
- Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals, and abrasive scrubbers.

Why should PLA products be kept away from heat?
PLA can soften or deform at temperatures far below those used by ovens, stovetops, dishwashers, and microwaves. Keep products away from hot pans, open flames, heating elements, and hot vehicles. Do not use a product if heat has changed its shape or fit.
When should a product be replaced?
Inspect reusable tools regularly. Discontinue use if an item develops deep scratches, cracks, chips, warping, separation, or excessive wear. Damaged surfaces can be more difficult to clean and may prevent the product from functioning as intended.
